The ever-popular Canadian Brass comes to the Hylton Center with a gift of impeccable music and witty repartee. Renowned for genre-bending versatility and joyous performances, this award-winning brass quintet entertains young and old alike with sparkling brass standards, toe-tapping holiday favorites, and clever holiday banter. Founded nearly 50 years ago, it is largely responsible for elevating the art of the brass quintet, performing in virtually every major concert hall in the world, being seen by millions on television, and selling over two million albums worldwide. Canadian Brass is composed of five musical masters: visionary founder and tuba legend Chuck Daellenbach, Caleb Hudson and Christopher Coletti (trumpets), Achilles Liarmakopoulos (trombone), and Bernhard Scully (horn). “After four decades, it’s great to see Canadian Brass—practically an institution at this point—still sounding fresh, still attracting young virtuosos and, above all, still having fun with the music.” (NPR Tiny Desk Concert)

Hear the compelling words of the great Martin Luther King, Jr. interwoven with incredible music created by African-American artists during the Civil Rights movement in this inspired production. Conceived and created by the accomplished musical artist Damien Sneed, We Shall Overcome blends actual recordings of Dr. King’s speeches with music from African-American traditions, tying together a lineage of music and culture that includes traditional gospel, modern gospel, classical, jazz, Broadway, and spirituals. From his seat at the piano, Sneed—an award-winning recording artist and a recipient of the prestigious Sphinx Medal of Excellence—guides the audience through this cultural journey, introducing soloists and sharing personal anecdotes, all accompanied by a choir and an instrumental ensemble. The artists fluidly cover a remarkable breadth of musical ground while celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. King. They perform traditional spirituals, as well as a broad range of music from luminaries like Aretha Franklin, Wynton Marsalis, Duke Ellington, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, and Donny Hathaway. “Damien Sneed is an ambassador for classical and gospel music…he uses his artistry to make our world a better place.” (Wynton Marsalis)

A Washington, D.C. resident, Pakhomkim was the only guitarist to be featured at Strathmore, the Kennedy Center, and the Phillips Collection series in the span of a single concert season in 2014. Throughout his career, he has earned many accolades, including the first prize from the 2012 Mexican International Guitar Competition in Culiacan, top prizes from the Boston GuitarFest International Guitar Competition, the Great Lakes Guitar Competition, the Montreal International Guitar Competition, and the European International Guitar Competition “Enrico Mercatali” in Italy. He also has extensively performed and given masterclasses throughout Europe and Central and Northern America. Pakhomkin earned a master’s degree from The John Hopkins University Peabody Institute and studied directly under Cuban classical guitarist Manuel Barrueco for six years.
